Los Ángeles Verdes de México (The Green Angels of Mexico)
What are the Green Angels? All of us have worried at one time or another, about breaking down on the road. Being stranded on the side of the road is stressful anywhere but especially so in a foreign country where you may not speak the language. Starting in the 1970's, the federal government has funded the Angeles Verdes or the Green Angels to assist stranded motorists in need of car/truck repair. The Green Angels drive green trucks (thus the name!) with their symbols clearly printed on the truck. In many areas, ours included, the Angel's are now driving newer trucks that are white with green lettering so keep an eye out for both. They are truly a blessed sight to see coming over the hilltop when you have run out of gas, can't change a flat, or your water pump has blown. The Angels patrol all toll roads and highways in Mexico, including our small stretch of road from Puerto Penasco to the Border. The tow trucks typically make a full-circuit trip of each highway per day in addition to responding to emergency calls.
What if I don't speak Spanish? In case you do not speak Spanish all drivers speak excellent to reasonably good English. Trained in CPR, the can administer basic first aid in case of emergency or accident. All drivers wear a green uniform and will present upon arrival official government ID with their name and picture on it.
How do I signal the Green Angels? If you are having problems open your hood to show you are in need of assistance. It is now also possible to call from any cell phone or Telmex phone booth by dialing 078. Your call will be routed to the Green Angels main dispatch in Mexico City and they will radio the appropriate unit for your location.
How much is this going to cost me? There's no charge for these services, but you will need to pay for the gas, oil, or parts that you require. Tips are not required but are appreciated and without a doubt well deserved!
